INDIA: Alstom has awarded ABB a contract to supply 1 600 traction transformers for the 800 twin-section Prima India electric freight locomotives it is to build for use on routes including the future Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor.

The transformers are to be manufactured at ABB's Vadodara facility in Gujarat, supporting the government's 'Make in India' initiative to encourage domestic production.

The 9 MW locomotives are to be produced at a factory at Madhepura in Bihar which is being developed under a 2015 joint venture agreement between Alstom and Indian Railways. Deliveries are scheduled for 2018-28.

ABB said the compact 25 kV 50 Hz transformers would be designed for demanding conditions including extreme temperatures and voltage fluctuations.

'ABB has been supplying traction transformers for Alstom's electric locomotives for more than a decade and this order confirms our position as a supplier of choice and a reliable long-term technology partner', said Claudio Facchin, President of ABB's Power Grids division. ?These state-of-the-art transformers will be locally manufactured and are an example of how ABB delivers differentiated customer value by leveraging its technology strengths and global footprint?.
